There is no way that this was supposed to work, and the entire time I was typing in the product key I was waiting for it to tell me that it was invalid, but lo and behold it actually really only went and fricking worked! I am puzzled by the price, but I can only think that it has something to do with licence costs being considerably cheaper in other countries and buying them there and selling them here. Whatever it is, thanks a bunch, MS and amazon and most people are selling the same thing for around £100+ more.
